Baobab Network

Positioning · Messaging · Brand strategy · Content strategy

African accelerators have a reputation problem, and the honest version of it is rarely said out loud. Founders who have been through one elsewhere arrive sceptical. Baobab had spent years quietly trying to rise above a perception it hadn't earned.

The instinct in that position is to differentiate against your neighbours. We did the opposite.

One name kept surfacing in the research, from founders, from investors, from the team itself. Y Combinator. Founders applied there first. Investors asked how Baobab was different. So we made YC the competitive frame. Not because Baobab was bigger, but because being measured against the gold standard elevates you and puts distance between you and the rest of your category in the same move. Avis did it to Hertz in 1962 and built a brand on it.

It also made the real differences obvious. A local team that lives and breathes African business. A pan-African reach that goes where nobody else looks. And a scale small enough that every single portfolio company gets genuine, personal attention.

Africa's Accelerator. From seed to superstar.

The same argument then had to travel. Several people on the team were building real followings on LinkedIn, independently, with nothing connecting them, individual voices growing while the firm's voice stayed still.

So we built a system. Each team member was given a defined audience, a set of themes they own, and a messaging lane that reinforces Baobab without flattening how they actually sound. The Connector, the Maester, the Sage, the Pillar, the Signal, five distinct roles, one argument.

The result is a content engine producing millions of organic impressions a year with no paid media behind it. Reach has grown more than 4× year on year, and because it compounds, it keeps growing.
