Mother In Law
South African Indian food has a place in the culture and almost no place in the going-out economy. It is takeaway, or it is somebody's mother's kitchen, beloved, everyday, and rarely treated as a night out.
Mother In Law was founded to argue the opposite: that the food deserves a room, a bar, a soundtrack and a reason to book a table. Not a fine-dining reinterpretation that apologises for its roots, and not a curry house. A cultural venue built around the cooking it grew up with.
The concept was curry and cocktails. Bold, loud, unmistakably South African Indian in flavour and unmistakably contemporary in delivery, a place where the bunny chow and the bar programme carry equal weight.
We built the brand around that collision. A wordmark and identity system with the confidence of a record label rather than a restaurant, a palette pulled from chilli, turmeric and saffron, and applications, signage, matchbooks, menus, merch, designed to travel further than the room itself.
It worked. Mother In Law drew significant media attention across South African food press, ran campaigns with Yoko, collaborated with Shelf Life, and hosted international brand launches for Puma.
Curry and cocktails. A cuisine, given a venue worth its name.
